Netflix: Juan Gabriel: I Must, I Can, I Will
Netflix sought to drive viewership for a new docuseries about Juan Gabriel. The challenge was to move beyond standard promotional tactics and honor the icon's complex legacy. The client tasked Monks Mexico with creating a campaign that would resonate deeply with his massive, loyal fanbase in Mexico, transforming his private history into a public, emotional experience that felt both authentic and monumental.
Creative Idea
Transformed private home archives into a massive, public, communal celebration of a national icon.
Netflix bridged the gap between the legendary icon and the vulnerable man, Alberto Aguilera, by transforming his private archives into a public emotional mirror, turning fan devotion into a massive, record-breaking cultural event that celebrated his 'pain bonito'.
The Man Who Filled The Zocalo Twice
Restoring A National Treasure
The production team undertook a massive technical challenge by remastering the 1990 Palacio de Bellas Artes concert footage into high-definition. This restoration served as the backbone for the campaign, allowing the team to present the legendary performance with modern clarity. The archival effort was equally staggering, drawing from a private collection of 2,268 physical tapes, 2,500 personal photos, and nearly 500,000 audio files recorded by Alberto Aguilera Valadez himself over three decades.
A Historic Public Takeover
The campaign utilized an immersive strategy, most notably through a takeover of the Bellas Artes Metro station. By transforming 27 distinct visual spaces into an exhibition of personal journals and photos, the agency bridged the gap between the public icon and the private man. This culminated in the November 8, 2025 Zocalo screening, which drew 170,000 attendees. This turnout set a record as the largest live event in Netflix history at a single venue and established Juan Gabriel as the first non-living artist to fill the historic square.

Metrics Of A Cultural Phenomenon
The impact extended far beyond the physical event, generating 407 million total impressions and 7.9 million direct engagements. The campaign secured 25,000 earned media stories, outperforming the media footprint of the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix by a factor of six. This momentum translated directly to the platform, keeping the docuseries in the Mexico Top 10 for three weeks and the Global Top 10 Non-English list for two weeks. The project was directed by Maria Jose Cuevas and produced by Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutierrez via Mezcla, with estate oversight provided by Ivan Aguilera.
