Siemens Healthineers - Magnetic Stories
Siemens Healthineers tasked AREA 23 with addressing the profound fear and anxiety children experienced during MRI scans. The objective was to transform this traumatic medical procedure into a more positive, comforting experience for young patients undergoing treatment.
Creative Idea
Transforming terrifying MRI machine noises into enchanting children's audiobooks for young patients.
Siemens Healthineers transformed terrifying MRI machine noises into enchanting children's audiobooks, replacing anxiety with wonder and making intimidating medical procedures a magical experience for young patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Turning 130 Decibels of Terror into Bedtime Stories
Reverse Engineering the Sound of Science
The production process inverted the traditional audiobook workflow. Instead of composing music to fit a script, authors from the Leya publishing house were handed raw, unfiltered audio sequences from MRI machines. These machines generate noise up to 130 decibels - louder than a military jet - caused by the rapid switching of magnetic gradients. Writers had to "score" their narratives to these specific mechanical rhythms, transforming every aggressive clunk, beep, and whirr into a plot point, such as a robot's voice or a train's engine. To deliver the audio safely, the team utilized non-magnetic, MRI-compatible headphones featuring piezoelectric transducers, which convert electrical signals into sound without interfering with the powerful magnets.
From Clinical Pilot to Global Standard
What began as a pilot program at CUF, Portugal's largest private hospital chain, has evolved into a scalable medical protocol. The initiative was so effective at reducing pediatric anxiety and ensuring "still" scans without sedation that it was expanded to all 25 CUF facilities. Beyond the hospital walls, the stories - including titles like "The Flying Train" and "A Shower of Potato Chips" - were released commercially on the Kobo platform. Siemens Healthineers is now scaling the program across Spain, Germany, Italy, and the UK.
The Future of Generative Healthcare
The project represents a shift from traditional advertising into service design. Sourabh Pagaria, Managing Director at Siemens Healthineers, noted the goal was to humanize the medical episode rather than just win awards. Looking forward, the brand is developing an integrated AI capable of writing and narrating custom stories in real - time, tailored to the unique, unpredictable sound sequences of any individual scan.
