FedEx: Carrier Pigeons
FedEx tasked BBDO New York with reinforcing its brand promise of reliability for business customers. The client needed to differentiate its professional shipping services from DIY or overly complex alternatives. The goal was to reach corporate decision-makers during the Super Bowl, illustrating that while some 'innovative' solutions seem clever, they often lead to catastrophic failure, making FedEx the only logical choice.
Creative Idea
An ambitious employee's absurd pigeon-shipping scheme causes chaos, proving FedEx is the only solution.
FedEx highlights its reliability by contrasting its professional service against an absurd, high-tech alternative. The campaign uses the relatable corporate frustration of 'great ideas gone wrong' to position FedEx as the only sensible solution for complex shipping needs.
Engineering Chaos with Half-Ton Digital Pigeons
The Physics of a Digital Disaster
To achieve the hyper-realistic destruction seen in the office, the team at Framestore New York bypassed traditional green screen techniques. Instead, they opted for a fully CGI approach, modeling the massive birds from scratch. This allowed for precise control over the physics of a half-ton creature, specifically the weight of their wing flaps and the complex movement of thousands of individual feathers. The team utilized Autodesk Maya and Flame to render the birds, ensuring they interacted seamlessly with the physical set pieces, such as the falling crates and the hoisted car.
Tracking the Tiny Helmets
One of the most intricate technical hurdles involved the birds' gear. While the production team experimented with physical prop helmets on real pigeons for reference, they proved ineffective. The final, convincing look was achieved by digitally tracking the birds using Boujou and MatchMover. This allowed the VFX artists to map the tiny green helmets onto the CG models with perfect perspective, maintaining the comedic deadpan tone of the spot.

A Three-Day Destruction Derby
The climax of the commercial was not a digital creation but a three-day live-action physical stunt shoot. The crew orchestrated the destruction of the office set, including the dramatic arrival of the car through the window. This practical footage served as the foundation for the compositing team, who spent the final weeks of production working around the clock to blend the digital birds into the chaotic, debris-filled environment. The result was a seamless marriage of high-stakes stunt work and advanced 3D animation that anchored the absurdity of the "Carrier Pigeons" concept in a tangible, believable reality.
