Budweiser: Whassup
Budweiser tasked DDB Chicago with revitalizing its brand image to better connect with young adult consumers. The client sought to move away from traditional, polished beer advertising tropes. The goal was to increase brand relevance and sales by capturing the authentic, relatable spirit of genuine friendship, ultimately aiming to make the brand a natural part of everyday social interactions.
Creative Idea
A simple, authentic phone greeting became a global, viral cultural ritual.
The campaign turned a mundane, authentic greeting between real-life friends into a global phenomenon by validating the simple, relatable joy of hanging out and drinking a beer, effectively transforming a casual ritual into a powerful cultural shorthand.
From Grainy VHS Tape to Global Phenomenon
The Thousand Dollar Origin Story
The campaign began with a $1,000 short film titled *True*, shot in 1998 by Charles Stone III. The footage was a grainy, low-budget VHS tape capturing his real-life friends in their natural element. When Vinny Warren of DDB Chicago saw the tape, he immediately recognized its raw, unscripted potential. The agency’s strategy was to license the original short and simply swap the characters' generic drinks for Budweiser, preserving the authentic chemistry that made the interaction feel so genuine.
Skepticism at the Executive Level
Despite the creative team's enthusiasm, Anheuser-Busch leadership was initially hesitant. Executives, including August Busch IV, feared that basing a national campaign on urban slang would alienate broader demographics. The brand initially authorized the spots only for a limited, small-scale test in urban markets. It was only after the undeniable, organic reaction from test audiences that the client gained the confidence to push the campaign to the Super Bowl XXXIV stage, where it became a massive success.

A Legacy of Cultural Evolution
The campaign’s influence extended far beyond the screen. It triggered a significant shift in advertising, proving that an all-Black cast could drive mass-market appeal without relying on tired tropes. The cultural footprint was immense, leading to $20 million in free earned media by 2001 and a surge in web traffic from 400,000 to 1.265 million monthly visitors. The campaign’s longevity is evidenced by its evolution, from the 2008 political commentary *Wassup 2008* to the 2020 pandemic-era revival, which successfully pivoted the iconic greeting into a tool for checking on mental health during global isolation.
