WWF Wonder World Fur: Bamboseal
Wonder World Fur aimed to launch a new luxury fur collection, 'A new species of fur,' to a fashion-forward audience. The client sought to generate significant buzz and differentiate the brand in a competitive market, establishing a memorable and unique identity for its products.
Creative Idea
A faux-documentary introduced a fictional, fur-losing seal to launch a luxury coat.
This campaign brilliantly used a faux-documentary style to introduce the fictional, fur-losing Bamboo Seal, creating a darkly humorous and ironic origin story for a luxury fur coat collection, effectively leveraging satire to generate buzz and differentiate the brand in the fashion market.
The High Fashion Satire That Fooled The World
A Masterclass in Positive Provocation
To celebrate its 40th anniversary in France, WWF moved away from traditional "shock and gore" tactics. Instead, the agency Marcel partnered with Publicis Argentina to create a "guilt-free" luxury brand. The strategy, dubbed "Positive Provocation," aimed to make not wearing fur fashionable by inventing a whimsical alternative. The campaign was so convincing that early viewers reportedly searched for real-life sightings of the Bamboseal, a creature that supposedly sheds its coat only when it sneezes.
High Fashion Pedigree and Material Science
The project’s authenticity relied on its high-end collaborators. Legendary photographer Mark Seliger shot the campaign featuring American model and environmentalist Angela Lindvall. To make the "imaginary fur" a physical reality, the London design collective Boudicca crafted a limited-edition collection using 100% natural mohair wool and Ahimsa "Peace" Silk, which is harvested without harming silkworms. This commitment to craftsmanship led to the Bamboseal gilet being featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s "Fashioned from Nature" exhibition.
Digital Craft and Faux Documentaries
Director Brent Harris spent weeks developing National Geographic-style footage using a blend of CGI and practical effects to depict the Dolyphan and Bufaloon. The digital experience at `wonderworldfur.fr` allowed users to interact with the species and hear meticulously designed "animal voices." While the animals were fictional, the impact was real: 100% of the proceeds from the physical clothing line were donated to WWF conservation efforts. As the creative team noted, the goal was to "awaken consciences with poetry" rather than anxiety.
