Brand mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks

Across roughly 75,000 brands, branded web mentions showed the strongest correlation with brand visibility in Google's AI Overviews at a Spearman coefficient of 0.664, against 0.218 for number of backlinks. Mentions correlate about three times more strongly than links.
