VUB Bank: Saving button
VÚB Bank tasked TRIAD in 2018 to address Slovakia's escalating consumer debt and low savings, particularly among online shoppers. The bank sought an innovative solution to help individuals curb impulsive spending, thereby increasing engagement with savings products and fostering better financial habits.
Creative Idea
VÚB Bank's plugin offered a "Rather Save" button alongside online purchase options.
VÚB Bank launched a browser plugin, the "Money Saving Button," that strategically placed a "Rather Save" option next to "Add to Cart" buttons on e-commerce sites, directly intercepting impulsive spending and empowering users to save a remarkable 79 million euros.
The Plugin That Turned Impulse Into 79 Million Euros
The behavioral nudge that beat debt
In 2018, Slovakia faced a historic financial crisis where consumer debt surpassed national savings for the first time. Triad Advertising responded by moving beyond traditional media to create a functional tool based on behavioral economics. The "Saving Button" was a browser plugin for Chrome and Firefox that utilized a custom script to identify "Add to Cart" buttons on the country's most popular e-commerce platforms. By injecting a "Rather Save" option at the exact moment of purchase, the agency removed the friction of traditional banking, allowing users to transfer the exact price of an item to their VUB savings account with a single click.
A funny therapy for spending addicts
The campaign was framed around the concept of "Savings Therapy," featuring a cast of characters struggling with "instant gratification" addiction. Chief Creative Officer Martin Woska noted that the goal was to treat unhealthy financial habits through humor rather than lecturing. This "anti-ad" approach was counter-intuitive for a bank, as it actively discouraged the transactions that typically generate credit card fees. Despite this, the strategy was a massive commercial success, resulting in 3x more deposits than the bank's yearly average.
National impact by the numbers
The campaign achieved a scale rarely seen in digital utility tools. Within just two months, the plugin helped shift the national mindset, leading to a total of €79 million saved by users. On an individual level, participants saved three times more money than they had in the previous year. The project was eventually ranked as one of the Top 5 Finance Campaigns in the world by the AdForum Business Creative Report, proving that a simple browser extension could outperform multi-million dollar traditional media spends.
