Eating habits play a major role in diseases, among the main causes of death in the United States: Heart disease (24.2%), cancer (23.3%), chronic lower respiratory disease (5.6%), cerebrovascular disease (5.2%), diabetes (2.8%), and kidney disease (2.0%). Chef Watson has created a food knowledge database containing recipes, an ingredient ontology, and nutritional facts, as well as characteristics of flavor compounds. The system can generate hundreds of novel recipe ideas, complete with proportions and instructions, and can evaluate quintillions of ingredient combinations. It can help individuals with diabetes develop dishes to regulate blood sugar and satisfy sweet cravings. Chef Watson can also suggest recipes based on ingredients on hand to reduce food waste, specifically targeting the five most wasted foods at home: citrus, sour cream, produce (especially celery), fresh herbs (cilantro, parsley), and bread. A Tex-Mex sandwich was created using these five ingredients.
