The Yangzhou Municipal Bureau tasked TBWA\Shanghai with revitalizing interest in Yangzhou's 1,200-year-old bathhouse culture. The client faced a decline in youth engagement and needed a way to make traditional massage rituals feel contemporary and culturally significant. The objective was to increase tourism and national awareness by transforming a fading local practice into a modern, shareable experience that would resonate with a younger, design-conscious demographic.

    Creative Idea

Massage sounds were recorded and remixed into a professional musical album.

The campaign transformed the rhythmic sounds of traditional Yangzhou bathhouse massage into a modern musical album, turning an overlooked, fading cultural ritual into a globally accessible, high-design auditory experience that reclaims heritage for a younger generation.

Turning Bathhouse Rhythms Into Global Beats

    Engineering the Sound of Relaxation

To capture the authentic acoustic profile of the Qiao Bei ritual, the production team utilized high-fidelity binaural microphones placed within the historic bathhouses of Yangzhou. This technique allowed listeners to experience the precise spatial positioning of the massage masters, creating an immersive "ASMR-like" effect. The recordings were then handed to Black Cat White Cat Music, an international production house, which layered these organic percussive sounds over contemporary electronic arrangements. By treating the human body as a drum kit, the team successfully bridged the gap between 1,200-year-old heritage and modern music production.

From Local Ritual to Global Charts

The campaign’s impact extended far beyond traditional tourism advertising. Upon its release in March 2025, the Yangzhou Qiao Bei Suite was distributed across major international music streaming platforms, effectively turning a local cultural practice into a global auditory product. This strategy allowed the Yangzhou Municipal Bureau to reach a younger, design-conscious demographic that typically ignores conventional travel spots. By positioning the bathhouse experience as a high-concept musical album, the agency transformed a fading tradition into a shareable, modern lifestyle trend.

    A Cultural Preservation Strategy

The project was designed to combat the decline of youth engagement in traditional Yangzhou bathhouse culture. By recontextualizing the massage as a rhythmic art form, the campaign gave younger generations a new entry point into their own history. The suite features four distinct tracks, including "The Magpie Perches on the Plum Tree" and "9, 7, 5", each utilizing specific tapping techniques—such as the hollow-fist method—to create unique sonic textures. This approach ensured that the campaign functioned as both a promotional tool for tourism and a digital archive of a disappearing cultural practice.
