Animal Político: El examen
Animal Político wanted to amplify its investigative findings on forced recruitment by cartels. They needed to reach a younger audience that typically avoids long-form text reports. Working with McCann Worldgroup México, the goal was to transform cold statistics into a high-impact narrative that would force a national conversation about the vulnerability of Mexico's youth and the failure of government scholarship programs.
Creative Idea
Turned a student's perfect exam score into a chilling recruitment message from a cartel.
Animal Político transformed a harrowing investigative report into a cinematic short film about a top student's forced recruitment, using the 'perfect exam' as a chilling Trojan horse to expose how cartels steal Mexico's brightest futures.
The Exam Where the Wrong Answer Costs Everything
From Red Zones to the Big Screen
The narrative foundation of the film is built upon the harrowing investigative work of journalist Manu Ureste, who traversed Mexico’s most dangerous "red zones" to collect testimonies for the reports México destruyendo el futuro and Permiso para Matar. To bridge the gap between hard news and cinematic storytelling, Wabi Productions and director Nicolás Bongiovanni employed a raw, "slice of life" aesthetic. This approach was designed to transform cold statistics - such as the 500,000 youth impacted by cartel violence - into an emotional gut-punch that resonated with a younger demographic typically averse to long-form text.
A Breakout Performance for Ariel
The campaign’s emotional weight rests on the shoulders of lead actor Alexis Varela, who was cast following his breakout role in the 2024 film *Sujo*. Playing the protagonist Ariel, Varela portrays a student whose life trajectory is violently derailed. The title El Examen serves as a chilling metaphor for the impossible "tests" young people face when approached by organized crime in states like Michoacán, Chihuahua, and Jalisco, where even the "right" choice can lead to a nightmare.
Redefining Journalistic Advertising
Industry experts have cited this project as a benchmark for Journalistic Advertising, a model where newsrooms leverage agency-level creative production from partners like McCann Worldgroup México to amplify investigative findings. Beyond its viral reach on Pájaro Político social channels, the campaign sparked a fierce critique of the government’s 120 billion pesos investment in the "Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro" program. It successfully shifted the national dialogue from general drug trafficking toward the specific human rights crisis of forced recruitment and the "cannon fodder" reality of Mexico's youth.

The ad's power lies in its unflinching realism and the slow-burn tension created through cinematography and sound design, leading to a gut-punch ending.
The long, handheld tracking shots create an immersive and claustrophobic sense of the environment.
The use of ambient urban noise instead of a traditional score heightens the realism and tension.
The combination of the gritty visual environment and the oppressive soundscape perfectly captures the psychological weight of the protagonist's situation.
