Shera Ceiling Board: Gecko Lovers
Shera, a ceiling board manufacturer, needed to differentiate its fiber cement boards in a competitive market. The client aimed to highlight the severe, often-ignored problems associated with inferior ceiling materials to homeowners, driving preference for Shera's durable solution.
Creative Idea
A tragic gecko love story dramatized the catastrophic consequences of a cracked ceiling.
The campaign used a dramatically exaggerated, tragic CGI gecko love story, culminating in their demise due to a cracked ceiling, to vividly illustrate the severe, often-overlooked problems of poor ceiling quality. This absurd narrative made a mundane issue emotionally impactful and memorable, positioning Shera Ceiling Board as the essential preventative solution.
A Tragic Gecko Romance That Built a Global Legacy
The Director of Melodramatic Comedy
The film was helmed by Suthon Petchsuwan, better known as "Mum", a legendary figure in Thai advertising. Mum is celebrated for a signature "melodramatic comedy" style that finds humor in the surreal. He famously noted that "Thai jokes are simple" and that his work serves as a playground to transform mundane life into high stakes theater. This philosophy turned a low interest commodity like fiber cement into a viral sensation long before the era of modern social media algorithms.
Hybrid CGI and Thai Chess
To achieve the heartbreaking facial expressions of the lizards, Digital Magic Effects House utilized a hybrid production approach. While real geckos provided the base movements, high end CGI for 2006 was used to animate the "Romeo" reach and the tearful embraces. A subtle detail for local viewers is the game of Makruk (Thai chess) being played by the three men. The gecko falls during a "drawish" match, a realistic touch that grounded the absurdity of the lizard suicide in a familiar Thai setting.

A Masterclass in Metaphorical Durability
The campaign is now a staple in advertising textbooks as the gold standard for metaphorical demonstration. By using a gecko’s tragic leap to prove structural integrity, Shera subverted a category previously defined by dry, technical specifications. The impact was immediate and lasting; Shera has been voted Thailand’s Most Admired Brand in its category for over 13 consecutive years. Beyond the industry, it birthed a long standing internet meme, with viewers frequently commenting that the ad is "still a better love story than Twilight."
