Montblanc: 100 Years of Meisterstück
Montblanc sought to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its iconic Meisterstück fountain pen. The brand needed to modernize its image and engage Gen Z and Millennial audiences who viewed traditional pens as relics. Solomon Winter was tasked with creating a global campaign that honored the pen's legacy while making it feel culturally relevant, whimsical, and desirable for a new generation of creators.
Creative Idea
Wes Anderson turned the brand's history into a whimsical, meta-theatrical mountain observatory adventure.
Wes Anderson reimagines the brand's heritage through a whimsical, meta-theatrical journey to a fictional mountain library, transforming the century-old Meisterstück fountain pen from a dusty writing tool into a vibrant icon of cinematic storytelling and creative imagination.
The Scribbler and the Fifty Take Mountain
The Accidental Fountain Pen
While the campaign centered on the Meisterstück, it birthed an entirely new product: the Schreiberling (The Scribbler). Wes Anderson arrived on set with a prototype his team had built, a move not included in the original brief. Montblanc artisans spent months engineering a functional version of Anderson's whimsical design. Released in a limited run of 1,969 units - a nod to the director's birth year - the $2,500 pen sold out almost immediately, requiring a restock in 2026 to meet unprecedented demand from Gen Z and Millennial collectors.
Practical Magic at Studio Babelsberg
Filmed at Studio Babelsberg in Berlin, the production eschewed digital shortcuts for "meta-theatrical" practical effects. For the "Montblanc Voyage of Panorama" train sequence in Chapter 2, the team built a vintage carriage where the passing scenery was manually powered by a crew member pedaling a bicycle underneath. Anderson’s exacting standards for symmetry and timing were famously on display during a 10-second mountain hut entry, which required 50 takes to perfect.
A Meta Cinematic Universe
The campaign features a star-studded ensemble including Jason Schwartzman, Michael Cera, and Rupert Friend, with Roman Coppola serving as co-director. The script leans heavily into meta-advertising; characters openly acknowledge they are in a commercial, with Cera’s character teasing Anderson for "advertising his own product" within the film. This self-aware tone, paired with Anderson’s appearance in mountaineering gear and a "ginger 'stache," drove significant brand search and curiosity, successfully repositioning the century-old instrument as a tool for modern storytelling.
