Magazine Luiza: An Agent Como a Gente
Magazine Luiza tasked Ogilvy Brasil with solving the high consumer frustration regarding automated customer service. The goal was to increase conversion rates and improve brand sentiment among Brazilian shoppers. The client needed a solution that felt natural, culturally resonant, and capable of driving sales within the existing digital habits of their target audience, specifically focusing on the WhatsApp platform.
Creative Idea
Transformed a virtual influencer into a culturally fluent AI shopping assistant on WhatsApp.
Magalu transformed their virtual influencer Lu into a conversational AI shopping agent on WhatsApp. By training her to understand Brazilian slang and cultural nuance, they bypassed consumer frustration with robotic bots to enable seamless, human-like commerce directly within the chat.
Giving Lu a Brain for Brazilian Commerce
Training the Virtual Influencer
To move beyond the limitations of standard scripted bots, the team at Ogilvy Brasil collaborated with Lightfarm Studios to integrate a sophisticated large language model into the existing Lu persona. The technical challenge was not just natural language processing, but cultural alignment. The AI was specifically trained on a massive dataset of Brazilian Portuguese slang, regional idioms, and informal communication patterns common on WhatsApp. This ensured that when a user sent a photo of a product or a vague request, the AI responded with the same tone and personality that followers of the virtual influencer have come to expect over the years.
Closing the Loop in Chat
The project represents a significant technical milestone in conversational AI-commerce. By bypassing the traditional friction of redirecting users to a mobile app or website, the team enabled a 100% end-to-end purchasing flow. Users can browse, ask questions, and finalize payments without ever leaving the messaging interface. This architecture was designed to solve the deep-seated distrust Brazilians hold toward automated customer service. By anchoring the technology in a familiar, beloved brand character, the agency successfully bridged the gap between high-tech automation and the human-centric service expectations of the local market.

Leadership and Execution
The project was a massive cross-departmental effort at Magazine Luiza, involving direct oversight from CEO Frederico Trajano and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Caio Gomes. The production was supported by Jamute for audio branding and Salva Studio for technical implementation. By focusing on the specific digital habits of the Brazilian population, the campaign turned a standard customer service tool into a high-conversion sales channel.
