Code of Conscience: Raoni Metuktire
Code Of Conscience aimed to combat the alarming rise in Amazon deforestation. They sought a compelling way to engage equipment manufacturers and the public, promoting a tangible solution to stop illegal logging in protected areas and empower environmental guardians.
Creative Idea
The campaign introduced open-source software that physically disabled illegal logging machinery in protected areas.
Code of Conscience leveraged open-source technology to create a system that physically disables heavy machinery entering protected areas, effectively empowering indigenous leaders like Raoni Metuktire and providing a direct, tangible solution to combat illegal deforestation where traditional methods often fail.
Hard Coding a Cyber Shield for the Amazon
The GPS Kill Switch
The technical core of the project is an open-source script that integrates a machine's GPS coordinates with the United Nations World Database on Protected Areas. Updated monthly, this "Cyber Shield" triggers a signal to the engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to automatically shut down the moment a vehicle crosses into a protected zone. For older, "analog" machinery, AKQA partnered with Tekt Industries to develop a low-cost hardware chip equipped with 4G and GPS, ensuring that even decades-old tractors could be retrofitted with a conscience.
A Jaguar in the Boardroom
To bypass traditional corporate gatekeeping, the team hand-delivered the technology to the CEOs of the world’s top 10 construction manufacturers, including Caterpillar, John Deere, and Komatsu. These weren't standard mailers; the chips were embedded inside wooden sculptures of endangered jaguars crafted from sustainably sourced timber. This direct-to-CEO "invitation" pressured industry leaders to adopt the code as a factory standard. As Executive Creative Director Hugo Veiga noted, while it is difficult to stop human intent, the campaign proved "we can stop the machines they use."

From Activism to Federal Law
The initiative moved beyond a creative stunt into the realm of "Utility as Advertising." By 2021, the project shifted from a voluntary opt-in to a legislative priority, with the code being reviewed by federal lawmakers in Brazil and Australia to become a mandatory requirement for all heavy machinery. Led by the voice of Chief Raoni Metuktire, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, the campaign successfully lobbied for a future where the forest’s boundaries are enforced by the very tools designed to clear them.
