Generali: (Save A) Life Insurance
Generali România faced a brand perception challenge and a societal crisis regarding high preventable death rates. They tasked VML România with finding a way to increase insurance engagement while addressing the lack of first-aid knowledge among the population. The goal was to create a meaningful, long-term impact that moved beyond traditional advertising to provide tangible value to the Romanian public.
Creative Idea
The insurance policy rewarded customers for learning how to save lives.
Generali transformed life insurance from a passive financial payout into an active survival tool by offering policy discounts to customers who completed certified first-aid training, effectively turning policyholders into potential life-savers to address Romania's high preventable mortality rate.
Rewarding Life Instead of Paying for Death
A Shift in the Golden Minutes
The campaign addressed a grim reality where 70,000 lives were lost annually in Romania due to preventable emergencies. Research conducted by Frappe Digital identified a significant cultural barrier: a sense of fatalism where citizens felt helpless during the critical "golden minutes" before ambulances arrived. While 8 out of 10 urban Romanians lacked confidence in their first-aid abilities, 7 out of 10 expressed a genuine desire to learn. By bridging this gap, Generali successfully pivoted from a passive financial entity to an active participant in public safety.
From Morbid Obligation to Empowerment
The initiative fundamentally restructured the insurance product. By integrating six interactive digital modules into their platform, Generali incentivized policyholders with a tangible financial discount for the first year of their contract. This mechanism turned the act of learning life-saving skills into a prerequisite for a premium reduction. The results were statistically significant: the lead-to-sale ratio surged from 9% to 63%, and the digital course completion rate hit 42%, nearly four times the industry standard for e-learning.

A Historic Milestone for Romania
The project was a collaborative effort involving VML România as the lead agency, with VML New York acting as a co-creation partner. Production was handled by Greenmind Studio, with post-production by Multimedia Est. The campaign’s success at the 2026 Cannes Lions marked the first time a Romanian insurance brand secured a trophy at the festival. As Ana Maria Pocora, Marketing and CRM Director at Generali România, noted, the win validated the conviction that an insurance brand could drive societal change, proving that PR is not just about earning attention, but about shifting human behavior.
