Spoor: The Birdwatcher
Spoor needed to overcome the perception that wind energy and nature are incompatible. The client tasked FP7 McCANN MENAT with finding a way to satisfy regulators and investors who were stalling projects due to bird mortality concerns. The objective was to provide verifiable, transparent evidence of coexistence to accelerate the permitting process for global wind energy developers.
Creative Idea
They turned invisible bird-tracking data into a beautiful, interactive visual experience.
Spoor transformed complex, ignored bird-collision compliance data into a living, visual system. By turning flight paths into accessible digital particles and physical guidebooks, they proved that wind energy and biodiversity can coexist, effectively dismantling the narrative of environmental harm.
Turning Invisible Data Into Tangible Proof
From Compliance PDFs to Living Art
The campaign addressed a critical industry bottleneck: biodiversity data was trapped in unread, dense compliance reports. To solve this, the team developed an interactive microsite where every particle on screen represents a real, verified bird flight path tracked by Spoor’s AI. This digital experience was complemented by a physical bird guidebook, designed as a traditional naturalist field guide but enhanced with Augmented Reality. These were hand-delivered to key investors and policymakers, turning abstract safety metrics into a tactile, undeniable argument for coexistence.
Intelligence Behind the Wings
The project relied on Spoor’s Sky Intelligence Platform, which utilizes camera-agnostic AI to monitor sites with at least 95% accuracy from up to 1.5 kilometers away. The system is trained on a proprietary dataset of over 4 million birds and 400,000 hours of observation. This technical rigor was validated at the Aberdeen Bay wind farm, where a 19-month monitoring period recorded 2,007 bird flight tracks and confirmed zero actual collisions.

Shifting the Industry Paradigm
Beyond the creative execution, the campaign served as a functional enabler for the $18 million TetraSpar floating wind turbine project, directly accelerating its regulatory path. By proving that AI-driven computer vision can trigger automated turbine curtailment, the initiative moved the wind energy sector away from defensive, manual observation toward a model of intelligent, automated infrastructure. As Associate Creative Director Rob Hall noted, the challenge was not proving coexistence, but making that proof impossible to ignore.
