ACR wanted to revolutionize driver education, which was perceived as outdated and unengaging. The brand needed an innovative way to help new students learn traffic rules more effectively and practically. The challenge was to make theoretical learning more relevant to real-world driving situations, improving engagement and knowledge retention among aspiring drivers. ACR sought a solution that would enhance the learning experience and ultimately produce better-prepared drivers.

    Creative Idea

ACR created virtual driving tests using Google Street View for students.

The Automobile Club of Romania (ACR) created a revolutionary driving education method called Street View Test, which uses Google Street View to help students learn traffic rules by practicing on real city streets virtually, making driver education more engaging and effective.

Hacking Google Street View Into A Driving Simulator

From Abstract Diagrams To Real Streets

The production team, led by Jorg Riommi and Dan Frînculescu, bypassed the need for expensive proprietary software by integrating the Google Street View API. This allowed them to "hack" existing global mapping data into a gamified educational tool. Official driving instructors were tasked with handpicking complex, real-life traffic scenarios from the streets of Bucharest, such as hidden stop signs and tricky priority-of-way intersections. This shifted the pedagogical approach from passive memorization to active situational awareness, a concept the industry now refers to as Utility Advertising.

    Global Adoption And Massive Enrollment

The impact extended far beyond a digital experiment. The platform increased the graduation rate of ACR students by 50% and drove a 35% surge in new enrollments. Its success caught the attention of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which officially endorsed the method, leading to its expansion into the Czech Republic and Latvia. The project was also featured in the Google Sandbox as a premier example of creative API usage.

    Crowdsourcing The Curriculum

A unique feature of the build was its crowdsourced element. Experienced drivers could flag real-world traffic mistakes or challenging urban spots they encountered. The digital team - including Călin Buzea and Tiberiu Bucovei - would then transform these user-submitted locations into new test questions. Creative Director Dan Frînculescu noted that traditional paper tests were "excruciatingly boring," which often resulted in drivers passing exams without a true understanding of road rules. By turning the city into a virtual classroom, ACR provided a genuine public service that addressed Romania's high road accident rates.

    Creative Strategy Deconstructed

    Company

As Romania's leading automotive authority, ACR possessed the credibility to redefine national safety standards and the instructional expertise to curate complex, real-world traffic scenarios.

    Category

The driving education category was stuck in the past, relying on abstract, century-old illustrated diagrams that bore little resemblance to the chaotic reality of modern urban driving.

    Customer

New drivers struggled with the transition from static textbooks to dynamic streets, feeling unprepared for the high-stakes environment and cognitive load of real-world traffic navigation.

    Culture

The ubiquity of Google Street View provided a familiar digital twin of the world, enabling a shift from passive textbook observation to immersive, localized virtual training.

    Strategy:

Replace abstract theory with virtual immersion to turn the digital world into a high-stakes classroom for real-world safety.

    Results

The campaign achieved 1,860 media placements, receiving extensive public attention and media coverage. It led to a 25% increase in new students enlisting at ACR driving school. Furthermore, 37% more ACR students passed the theory exam from the first attempt. The "Street View Test" is in plan to be implemented as an official method in driving schools across Romania. It was also picked by FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) and Creative Sandbox by Google, suggesting international recognition and potential for global application as a traffic education tool.
