UNICEF Ukraine: An Award That Makes Care Visible
UNICEF Ukraine, working with agency Postmen, sought to elevate the public perception of caregivers and foster parents. The client needed a way to honor these individuals for their vital role in the national transition to family-based care. The objective was to create a meaningful, high-impact recognition program that moved beyond traditional award aesthetics to truly reflect the emotional weight of their contribution to children's lives.
Creative Idea
A trophy that reveals human handprints through heat, symbolizing the warmth of caregiving.
UNICEF Ukraine created a tactile, thermochromic trophy for caregivers that physically reacts to human touch. By using heat-sensitive materials, the award visually demonstrates that while care is often invisible, its impact is deeply felt and leaves a lasting, warm impression.
The Science of Capturing Human Warmth
Engineering the Invisible Impression
To achieve the trophy's signature reaction, the production team at How Production faced significant technical hurdles. The goal was to ensure the award responded specifically to the temperature of human hands, typically between 36°C and 40°C. The team conducted extensive iterative testing to calibrate the custom-engineered thermochromic finish. By mixing specialized pigments into a water-based coating, they created a surface that reacts instantly to touch. Because wood possesses unique thermal properties, it retains heat longer than the solid aluminium base, allowing the imprint of the caregiver's hand to linger on the object even after it is set down.
A Monument to Systemic Change
The design philosophy intentionally rejected conventional trophy aesthetics like glass or gold plating. Instead, the team chose a minimalist brick form to serve as a metaphor for the foundational work required to transition children from institutional boarding facilities into family-based care. The contrast between the cold, structural aluminium and the warm, organic wood represents the balance between the systemic reforms led by the Coordination Centre for Family-Based Care and the human-centric nature of the work performed by foster parents and social workers.

Beyond the Trophy Case
This project served as the flagship recognition piece for the broader Better Care for Every Child reform in Ukraine. By moving away from traditional awards, the agency aimed to provide a physical, grounding object that acknowledges the monumental emotional burden carried by those on the front lines of child protection. The trophy is now a central element of the Better Care Awards program, ensuring that the invisible, daily efforts of caregivers are given a tangible, lasting form that resonates with the gravity of their mission.

Make the Invisible Visible
The trophy uses thermochromic technology to manifest the abstract concept of care into a physical, fleeting imprint. This directly visualizes the emotional warmth caregivers provide to children.

This campaign's craft excels through innovative industrial design and material science, turning a physical trophy into a poetic metaphor that responds to human touch.
The physical object design brilliantly translates the emotional metaphor of human warmth and care into a functional, heat-responsive trophy.
Meticulous selection of raw materials, metal machining, and custom chemical paint mixing elevate the physical object's build quality.
“The combination of symbolic industrial design and custom material chemistry elevates a simple award into an interactive narrative piece.”
