Nike sought to redefine basketball training and player engagement for athletes and coaches. The challenge was to demonstrate Nike's innovation leadership by creating a revolutionary experience that enhanced skill development, tracked progression, and made the game more dynamic and accessible at all levels.

    Creative Idea

Nike built an interactive LED court that gamified training and tracked player performance.

Nike transformed basketball training with an interactive LED court that dynamically displays drills, tracks player data, and visualizes progression in real-time, making the game more innovative, engaging, and faster to learn and teach through cutting-edge technology.

Building the House of Mamba with Glass and Light

    1,680 Screens Under Glass

To bridge the gap between physical sport and digital gaming, AKQA and Rhizomatiks engineered a surface consisting of 1,680 interlaced LED screens. The construction was a high-stakes gamble on materials: a base of traditional wood for bounce, topped by LEDs, pressure-resistant glass, and a specialized Scotchcal luster overlaminate. This final adhesive layer was critical, as it provided the specific "squeak" and traction required for professional play. The project was so experimental that the production team remained uncertain if the glass would provide enough grip until the final testing phase.

    Training Against Kobe's Ghost

The court functioned as a giant, reactive computer powered by infrared cameras and shoulder sensors. This allowed the "House of Mamba" to visualize Kobe Bryant’s actual training drills as "ghost" players on the floor, forcing athletes to match his footwork in real-time. Bryant, who served as the primary mentor, noted that the technology made the "possibilities for the floor endless." The system could instantly pivot from displaying traditional court markings to full-court video or gamified training paths.

    Thirty Billion Impressions

The "Rise" campaign became a cultural phenomenon in China, generating over 30 billion impressions. While tens of thousands applied for the talent search, only 30 players earned the chance to train on the LED surface. The digital reach was equally massive, with the "House of Mamba" content alone securing 7 million views shortly after launch. Beyond the spectacle, the campaign drove significant commercial results, as exclusive "Rise" product collections for Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Paul George sold out during the tour.
