Kotex: 血の戦い | THE BLOOD BATTLE: It began suddenly, but it made me stronger
Kotex challenged FCB Artgroup Kazakhstan to reach teenage girls in a conservative market where parental taboos prevented open discussions about menstruation. The client needed a way to provide accurate puberty education that bypassed traditional gatekeepers. The goal was to replace shame with empowerment by speaking directly to girls through a medium they trusted, effectively normalizing the biological experience of growing up.
Creative Idea
Turned menstrual fears into anime monsters to empower girls through relatable battle narratives.
Kotex transformed menstrual taboos into an anime battle series, turning internal fears like shame and mood swings into literal monsters. By using authentic hand-drawn animation, the brand bypassed parental gatekeeping to speak directly to teenage girls in their own cultural language.
Defeating the Shame Monster Without AI
The Anti-AI Creative Choice
While the advertising industry has pivoted toward generative tools, the team at FCB Artgroup Kazakhstan made a deliberate, high-stakes decision to reject AI for this project. To ensure the campaign resonated with a Gen Z audience that values authenticity, the agency partnered with Animation Studio Teniz and VISIOTAPE Production Studio to produce the series using traditional, frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation. This commitment to manual craft was essential to mirror the visual language of the anime genre, which teenage girls in the region already trust and consume.
Turning Taboos Into Boss Battles
The narrative structure was built on six specific emotional insights gathered from local female bloggers and influencers. By gamifying the experience of puberty, the campaign turned abstract anxieties into tangible antagonists. The Shame Devourer was designed to grow in size and power specifically through silence, serving as a direct metaphor for the cultural stigma surrounding menstruation in Kazakhstan. Other episodes tackled the "evil doppelgänger" of hormonal mood swings and framed the daunting prospect of a first gynecologist visit as the final boss battle, which could only be won by confronting the fear directly.

Bypassing the Parental Gatekeepers
The campaign was strategically designed to navigate a conservative cultural landscape where parents often act as gatekeepers for health information. By adopting the aesthetic of anime, the brand successfully bypassed traditional parental channels to establish a direct, peer-to-peer connection with teenage girls. This approach aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, specifically focusing on a girl's right to access accurate bodily information. The content was distributed primarily through TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube, meeting the target audience exactly where they spend their digital time.
