Google Australia and R/GA Sydney needed to differentiate Google Play Music in a crowded streaming market. They aimed to demonstrate the platform's technological edge while building deep emotional resonance with Australian audiences. The goal was to launch the Hilltop Hoods' new album while supporting CanTeen, a charity for young people living with cancer, by turning a personal song into a shared experience.

    Creative Idea

Used mobile accelerometers to let fans tilt their phones between two parallel 3D worlds.

Google Play Music transformed a rapper's personal story of his son's cancer battle into an interactive 3D film where users physically tilted their phones to navigate between hope and fear, turning a passive listen into a visceral, charitable experience.

Taming the Accelerometer to Navigate Cancer

    A custom pipeline for 150MB of 3D

The technical feat of Through The Dark lay in delivering 4.5 minutes of high-fidelity 3D animation through a mobile browser without an app. To achieve this, XYZ Studios and R/GA developed a custom pipeline to export complex Maya animations into Three.js JSON objects. The team managed to compress the entire interactive experience into a 150MB payload, utilizing WebGL and the Web Audio API to ensure the music and visuals remained perfectly synced while the user tilted their device.

    Toggling between fear and hope

The narrative was driven by the personal history of Hilltop Hoods member MC Pressure (Daniel Smith), whose son Liam was diagnosed with leukemia at age eight. This emotional weight informed the dual-world mechanic: "The Dark" represented the chaos of illness, while "The Light" symbolized recovery. On mobile, the accelerometer allowed users to physically tilt their phones to transition between these states. Desktop users could access a hidden "Dev Tool" by pressing the tilde (~) key, enabling a free-fly mode through the 3D geometry and lighting settings.

From digital film to real world access

Beyond the screen, the campaign established the Side of Stage initiative. This program moved past digital storytelling to provide young cancer patients with dedicated "side of stage" viewing areas and special access at major music festivals across Australia. Financially, the project turned streams into support, raising approximately $35,000 for the charity CanTeen by donating $1 for every album listen triggered through the film. Sophie Hirst of Google Australia noted the project's goal was to marry "bleeding-edge technology" with the raw, human reaction to the music.

    Craft Breakdown

This campaign's craft is exceptional due to its seamless integration of interactive technology with a deeply personal, cinematic narrative. The use of mobile hardware to drive the visual storytelling creates a unique sense of intimacy and agency.

    TechnologyExceptional

The use of a smartphone's gyroscope to navigate a 3D environment in real-time is a masterclass in interactive storytelling.

    AnimationExceptional

The minimalist 3D animation is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant, using simple forms to convey complex feelings.

    Art Direction

The stark monochrome palette and geometric design create a powerful, cohesive visual language that perfectly complements the song's themes.

    Cinematography

The virtual camera work is expertly choreographed to maintain a cinematic feel while allowing for user-driven perspective shifts.

The magic comes from how the technology (gyroscope control) directly serves the narrative theme of perspective and finding light in the dark.
