Diesel needed to revitalize its "For Successful Living" philosophy for a socially conscious Gen Z audience. Publicis Italy was tasked with creating a campaign that moved beyond superficial fashion imagery to build a deep emotional connection. The brand wanted to champion individual freedom and authenticity, specifically targeting independent thinkers who value personal truth over societal expectations and traditional markers of achievement.

    Creative Idea

Diesel followed a transgender woman's transition and her ultimate journey toward becoming a nun.

Diesel chronicled the transition of Francesca, a transgender woman who finds her ultimate success by following her faith into a nunnery, proving that "Successful Living" means having the courage to live your most authentic truth.

Trading Denim for a Habit in a Global Act of De-Marketing

    A Masterclass in Brand Bravery

The campaign’s impact was defined by its refusal to pander. Following the launch, Diesel famously celebrated an "exodus" of 14,000 Instagram followers who left the page in protest. Rather than issuing a corporate apology, the brand posted a "Bye-bye" message, a move that became a landmark case study in de-marketing to toxic audiences. This polarizing stance paid off commercially; web traffic to Diesel.com doubled from 30,000 to 60,000 daily visits almost immediately, proving that standing for a specific value set can drive deeper engagement than broad appeal.

    Authentic Collaboration and Casting

To ensure the narrative avoided "rainbow washing," Publicis Italy partnered with Diversity, an Italian association for social inclusion, to consult on the script. The lead role was played by Harlow Monroe, a real-life transgender model and activist who noted that the story mirrored her own journey as a person of faith. Directed by François Rousselet - known for his work with Kanye West and Pharrell Williams - the film utilized a cinematic, gritty aesthetic to document the physical transition process, including hormone therapy and legal document changes, before the final reveal of Francesca entering a nunnery.

    Production During a Global Lockdown

Launched in June 2020, the campaign had to adapt to the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the main film was a high-production piece, the accompanying Pride capsule collection assets were self-shot by LGBTQ+ individuals in their own homes. To replace a physical launch event, Diesel hosted a 24-hour global digital party on Zoom in partnership with Club Quarantine, ensuring the message reached its audience despite international travel bans. Proceeds from the collection supported the SF LGBT Center and Transgender Europe.
