Burns and Smiles approached TBWA Paris. The client wanted a campaign to empower burn survivors, who faced significant challenges managing public perception and feeling normal in social settings. The brand needed a creative way to help burn victims gain confidence and acceptance, transforming potentially intimidating social situations into moments of empowerment and inclusion. The objective was to foster a sense of normalcy for them.

    Creative Idea

By dressing burn survivors in Halloween costumes, Burns and Smiles normalized their appearance and built social confidence.

Burns and Smiles created a Halloween campaign that allows burn survivors to dress up in costumes, turning a potentially intimidating social situation into an empowering moment of acceptance. By using Halloween as a platform, the campaign helps burn victims feel normal and gain confidence by participating in a social event where everyone is wearing a mask or costume.

The Only Night Scars Become Invisible

The Power of the Inverted Insight

The campaign’s success was built on what advertising schools now call an "inverted insight." While most brands use Halloween to lean into horror and shock, TBWA\Paris identified it as the only day of the year a burn victim can navigate public spaces without being the subject of a "social stare." Creative Director Benjamin Marchal noted that the goal was to depict the daily "horror" of these individuals not through their physical appearance, but through the judgmental eyes of society. This shift in perspective transformed the holiday from a celebration of the macabre into a rare window of social anonymity.

    Authenticity Through Cinéma Vérité

To maintain absolute authenticity, the production team cast a real burn survivor in the lead role. Directors Fleur & Manu utilized a "cinéma vérité" style, following the protagonist through a night of clubbing and socializing. The production used subtle makeup and specific lighting to enhance the cinematic quality of the survivor's scars, ensuring they looked like a high - end prosthetic mask to the audience. This technical choice was vital for the "twist" ending - the viewer only realizes the protagonist is not wearing a mask when he returns home and does not remove it.

    Launching a National Conversation

As the first major French campaign dedicated to the social reintegration of burn victims, the film achieved millions of views across Facebook and YouTube. Beyond the digital reach, it successfully launched the Burns and Smiles association, building a community of thousands and shifting the national dialogue from fire prevention to the psychological challenges of disfigurement. The film’s impact was so significant that it led to a 2018 follow - up campaign titled #ChangeonsDeRegard.

    Creative Strategy Deconstructed

    Company

As a support organization for burn victims, the brand provides the emotional tools and community backing needed to help survivors navigate the psychological trauma of public scrutiny. They offer a platform for survivors to reclaim their identity beyond their physical scars.

    Category

Charity campaigns in this space often rely on shock value or heavy-handed pity, which can unintentionally reinforce the 'otherness' of burn victims. They typically focus on the tragedy of the accident rather than the humanity of the survivor's daily life.

    Customer

Burn survivors experience a deep desire for 'social invisibility'—the ability to exist in public spaces without being the subject of stares, whispers, or uncomfortable sympathy. They want to be seen as people, not as victims.

    Culture

Halloween is a unique cultural window where masks and facial differences are the norm rather than the exception. It is the only night where being 'different' allows a person to blend in perfectly with the crowd.

    Strategy:

Leverage Halloween’s costume culture to transform the stigma of scars into a moment of liberating, everyday social normalcy.
