A Viral Pioneer Born from Scraps
The production of Evolution is a masterclass in efficiency, created with just C$135,000 (approx. $115,000 USD) in "leftover" funds from a previous Dove project. Despite the shoestring budget, it became the first major brand video to go truly viral on YouTube, proving that purpose-driven content could bypass traditional media buys. Within its first year, it garnered 12 million views, but its total reach was far greater - a single Super Bowl airing generated 490 million total impressions through pre- and post-game publicity.
The Anatomy of Digital Distortion
Director Tim Piper was inspired by the hours his girlfriend spent on makeup, leading him to cast Stephanie Betts, a Canadian cartoonist rather than a professional model, to ensure the "before" look was relatable. The shoot took only one day, centered on a 2.5-hour makeup session compressed into a time-lapse. In post-production, Soho Post created a custom graphic interface to mimic professional retouching software, as the "Photoshop" look seen in the ad was actually a designed animation. Sharp-eyed viewers will notice the billboard at the end features a fictional brand named Fasel Foundation.
