Save the Children: FER
Save the Children Mexico tasked (anónimo) with raising awareness about the extreme levels of gender-based violence and femicide in the country. They needed to move beyond traditional charity advertising to engage a desensitized public and pressure institutions for better protection of girls and women, targeting the general Mexican population and policymakers to demand systemic change.
Creative Idea
A child's identity is revealed as a girl disguised as a boy for safety.
The campaign follows a child navigating daily harassment in Mexico, only to reveal the protagonist is a girl disguised as a boy by her mother - a heartbreaking commentary on how gender-based violence forces families to erase identity for survival.
The Survival Strategy of a Gender Neutral Name
A Cinematic Vision for Survival
To move away from traditional "pity - based" charity advertising, (anónimo) partnered with Catatonia Films and director Laura Baumeister. Known for her "magic realist" style in the film *Daughter of Rage*, Baumeister brought a cinematic gravity to the project that prioritized human dignity over shock value. The production adhered to a strict low - footprint strategy to align with Save the Children’s sustainability goals. The crew was kept small and local, utilizing natural lighting and real locations exclusively. By avoiding built sets, the team maintained a raw, documentary - like atmosphere that mirrored the "structural crisis" facing Mexican girls.
The Hidden Identity of Fer
The name Fer was a deliberate narrative choice, selected because it is gender - neutral in Spanish - serving as shorthand for both Fernando and Fernanda. This linguistic ambiguity allowed the protagonist to transition between identities seamlessly within the story. The narrative highlights a grim reality where girls are twice as likely to experience violence due to their gender, forcing families to erase a child's identity just to ensure their safety. Ivonne Piedras, Communications Director at Save the Children, noted that the film serves as an urgent call to action in a country where 10 women are murdered every day, one of whom is a minor.
Redefining Independent Creative Power
The campaign’s success solidified (anónimo) as a powerhouse in the industry, helping them become the most creative independent agency in Mexico for 2025. By opting for an "Entertainment - Education" approach, the agency forced a national conversation on the normalization of violence. The project moved beyond awareness, utilizing a digital dossier to outline specific institutional actions Save the Children is implementing to protect the futures of girls across the country.
