Surfshack: Chasing The Dragon
Surfshack Surf Outreach tasked Y&R South Africa Cape Town with raising awareness for their rehabilitation program. They needed to reach youth in Cape Town's Cape Flats, where drug addiction and gang violence are rampant. The goal was to prove that surfing offers a viable path out of poverty and substance abuse by providing a different kind of spiritual and physical high.
Creative Idea
Subverted the slang for drug use by positioning surfing as a life-saving "new addiction."
Surfshack reframed the destructive "chase" of drug addiction by positioning the physical and spiritual high of surfing as a powerful, healthy alternative, proving that the best way to fight a lethal addiction is with a life-affirming one.
Subverting the High from Heroin to H2O
From Logo Design to Gold Lions
What began as a modest 2015 corporate identity brief for a local surf school evolved into a global cinematic phenomenon. Graham Lang, CCO of Y&R South Africa, noted that the project transformed when the agency realized the profound narrative potential of the ocean as a tool for social change. By the time it launched in June 2016, the initiative had shifted from a branding exercise into a high - stakes public service campaign designed to disrupt the cycle of addiction in Cape Town's marginalized communities.
Gritty Authenticity and Visual Analogies
To capture the disorienting nature of substance abuse, director Siphiwe "SJ" Myeza - Mhlambi and the team at 7Films utilized a non - linear sequencing technique. This "docu - style" approach was intentional, creating a raw, provocative narrative that Nkanyezi Masango described as a "visual analogy" meant to hook the viewer. The film’s emotional core is driven by a young poet whose spoken - word narration provides a haunting, rhythmic backbone to the footage.
A Milestone for South African Film
The production holds significant historical weight within the industry. SJ Myeza - Mhlambi’s success with this campaign marked a breakthrough for young Black South African directors on the international stage, proving that local craft could outperform massive global budgets. Beyond the industry accolades, the campaign achieved its primary goal of elevating Surfshack’s mission, successfully positioning the "high" of catching a wave as a life - affirming replacement for the destructive "chase" of the dragon.
