Red Cross and Filsa Water tasked Ogilvy Colombia to develop an immediate, scalable solution for potable water access in remote Colombian communities. The goal was to significantly reduce waterborne diseases among underserved populations, demonstrating a tangible commitment to child care and public health.

    Creative Idea

A simple bottle cap was ingeniously transformed into a portable, life-saving water filter.

Red Cross and Filsa Water transformed a standard PET bottle cap into a portable, biodegradable water filtration station, providing an immediate, accessible, and sustainable solution for communities lacking safe drinking water, leveraging existing plastic waste for a vital humanitarian purpose.

The Handheld Treatment Plant Made of Corn

3D Printing a Life Saving Standard

To ensure the device was as sustainable as the water it purified, Ogilvy Colombia utilized 3D printing technology with a cornstarch-based resin. This sweet corn extraction makes the caps 100% biodegradable and compostable after their one - year lifespan. Despite weighing only 24 - 28 grams, each cap functions as a miniature treatment plant. The design utilizes the PCO 28mm thread, the universal standard for PET bottles, allowing the Red Cross to turn discarded plastic pollution into a functional tool for survival.

    720,000 Liters of Annual Impact

The initial rollout of 1,000 Filter Caps across remote regions like La Guajira and El Choco yielded immediate results, reclaiming over 300,000 liters of water in just two months. The internal filtration mechanism - a complex layering of metals, minerals, and activated carbon - reduces impurities by 70% and eliminates 90% of heavy metals. At a production cost of less than $6 per unit, the system can purify water at a rate of 200 ml per minute, increasing pH levels and adding hydrogen to previously undrinkable sources.

    A First for Colombian Innovation

The project marks a historic milestone as Ogilvy Colombia became the first agency from the country to be featured on TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions list. Beyond the immediate relief provided to 2,000 individuals, the project was designed with an open - source philosophy. This allows the technology to be shared globally for use in war zones and natural disaster sites. As CCO Gastón Potasz noted, the innovation was not based on existing technology but was built from scratch to address the specific crisis of child malnutrition in forgotten communities.

    Creative Strategy Deconstructed

    Company

Red Cross and Filsa Water leveraged their humanitarian mission and water purification expertise to develop a practical, scalable solution.

    Category

Traditional humanitarian aid often relies on large-scale infrastructure or bottled water, overlooking immediate, personal filtration solutions.

    Customer

Communities in remote, arid regions desperately needed immediate, accessible, and safe drinking water to combat waterborne diseases.

    Culture

Growing global awareness of water scarcity and the need for sustainable, innovative humanitarian solutions made this impactful.

    Strategy:

Empower vulnerable communities with immediate, sustainable access to essential, life-saving resources.

    Results

The campaign highlights a critical problem: over 3.7 million people in Colombia lack access to safe drinking water. The Filter Caps solution purifies and mineralizes water at a rate of 200ml per minute. The casing of the filter is made from a bio-resin derived from sweet corn extraction, making it 100% biodegradable. The device itself is compact, measuring just 4 by 6 centimeters, and is described as an entire water treatment plant in miniature. This solution is vital for over 10,000 people who live far from urban centers and lack access to infrastructure. The Colombian Red Cross is teaming up with Filter Caps to expand their impact into new territories within Colombia, with future potential to provide crucial water access during global emergencies like wars or natural disasters.
