Creative Strategy: 100 findings, with sources

Storytelling is instrumental to performance, not the opposite of it. The idea that brand is storytelling and performance is not comes from the banner-ad and DCO era; short-form video performance advertising is now one of the best ways to tell a brand's story at scale to exactly the right people, and it is how younger audiences form affinity with brands.

Juniper, Eucalyptus's medical weight loss brand, started from the insight that people saw medical weight loss as cheating. It tested hundreds of Meta ads arguing 'medical weight loss is not cheating', graduated the winning language into a YouTube explainer, then a TV campaign, and finally a national white paper and PR campaign on sentiment around medical weight loss, all carrying the same message.

Social devices are repeatable creative frameworks that compound brand memories over time - the creator-world equivalent of distinctive brand assets. Brands win by entering a creator's social devices, not by forcing their brand world onto social.

The audience doesn't tire of creative before the creator does - the prevailing idea that audiences burn out on repeated formats is backwards; entrained patterns are why people watch.

Healey became a Tracksuit investor (employee share options) after the partnership proved itself - structuring creator deals as long-term equity-aligned relationships reflects the evidence that creators work best as long-term brand building, not short-term demand capture.

Brand as canvas, creator as painter: the creator owns the audience relationship, and the audience cares about your brand only as much as the creator convinces them to. You're buying a distinct perspective, not a distribution channel - unlike celebrities, who are 'empty vessels'.

Divergent creator executions should still scaffold into coherent brand associations - 'brand as mosaic'. Build the brand so its associations survive mediated contexts where each creator renders them differently.

Creator briefs fail at two extremes: the 'brand dominatrix' brief (control every word - turns the creator into a sock puppet and breaks the pattern their audience trusts) and the no-direction brief. Build a sandbox instead: one message, the strategic challenge, the context, and the creator's role in the wider campaign.

Advertising built to work inside the performance loop: made fast, tested against live audience response, and iterated on what the data says. Not a lesser craft than brand work - a different production logic, where volume and feedback replace the single polished master.

The opening device of an ad - the first seconds, frame or line whose only job is to earn the next few seconds of attention. On feed platforms most viewers never get past it, which is why hook rate is graded before anything else.

The persuasive premise an ad argues from: the specific desire, pain, objection or belief it chooses to address. One product supports many angles - convenience, status, fear of missing out, price - and performance testing is largely the search for the angle that resonates.

Ads built with or fronted by content creators, run from the brand's account or boosted from the creator's own handle. They borrow the creator's earned trust and native fluency with the platform - the relationship the creator built is the media value.

Attention actually paid to an ad - eyes on the creative - as opposed to the ad merely being on screen and 'viewable'. Measured with eye tracking; a few seconds of active attention predict memory and sales effects that thousands of technically viewable impressions do not.

Advertising built to trigger an immediate, measurable action - click, sign-up, purchase - with a clear offer and call to action. The craft predates digital by a century; performance marketing is direct response with better feedback loops.

The short document that turns strategy into a creative assignment: the problem, the audience, the single most important thing to say, the evidence for it, and what the work must achieve. The most leveraged page in advertising - a sharp brief multiplies every hour of creative work that follows, and a vague one taxes it.

Kantar's Creator Content Effectiveness Framework scores creator work on five powers: Cultural Power (does it feel authentic in the communities that matter), Algorithmic Power (is it designed to earn platform visibility), Engagement Power (does it invite interaction), feeding Brand Power (meaning over time) and Sales Power (commercial outcomes). Engagement still matters - but only as one part of the system.

Over-engineer creator content with too many guardrails and brand mandates, and you kill the very thing that makes it work. Treat it as pure creative freedom with no accountability for outcomes, and you're funding entertainment that never moves your business.

George Howes' 15 elements of a high-performance creative team come down to a tight feedback loop between media buyers and creatives, a culture that tests instead of debating, metrics owned by the whole team, a shared and regularly updated messaging matrix, a shared understanding of what drove past wins, the ability to iterate winners by going deeper rather than sideways into replicas, following the eye of the cultural storm, clean repeatable processes, acting on competitor formats, and a culture that keeps taking bets with outsized returns.

Pilot, Eucalyptus's men's health brand, put up a provocative billboard that was pulled after roughly a day. The buy itself was cheap and modest, but the photo of it ran through performance and organic channels, the takedown became a story about men's health, and the attention outlived the placement many times over.

Creative graduation: use performance channels, where data is cheap and immediate, to test as many angles, creators and messages as possible; graduate the winners to a higher-production YouTube ad, another channel with reliable metrics; once it works there, commit the budget to TV and extend the same message into PR, the website and organic. Every step adds confidence, and the result is one unified message across channels.

A pre-purchase 'how did you hear about us?' survey lets Eucalyptus pair each referral channel (TV, radio, out-of-home) with its spend, conversion and LTV, turning brand channels into something that can be compared on efficiency. It is imperfect self-reported data, so it is triangulated with brand tracking, ad-account creative data and GA first-party data.

Eucalyptus sets a standard media mix each month but treats it as a starting point: everyone who touches a media dollar owns the whole budget pool, a weekly all-brands review asks where money went, whether it was incremental, and where to pull from, and every month a no-strings pool is reserved for a new channel or a creative or brand bet that is allowed to flop.

Eucalyptus replaced its siloed brand and performance teams with a full-stack team per brand (growth or creative lead, growth marketer, creatives, producer) that owns its budget and targets across everything from TV to Meta ads. Hire storytellers in every role, not just copywriters, and cover three ownerships: an allocator of capital, an allocator of ideas and an allocator of time, because a TVC can consume the whole team for weeks and kill performance creative velocity.

The systematic comparison of ad variants against live results - angles, hooks, formats, creators - to find what resonates before scaling spend. The discipline is less about any single test than about running the loop continuously and graduating winners.

Testing an ad with its audience before money goes behind it, usually by measuring emotional response, branding and recall on a standardised scale. The point is not a grade but a cheap early read: fixing a weak ad before launch costs a fraction of learning it in-market.

Advertising that engages broad, contextual, human attention - character, story, place, humour, music - rather than narrow feature-and-claim messaging. The distinction comes from brain lateralisation research: right-brained features have declined in advertising for two decades, and their absence tracks falling effectiveness.

Eugene Schwartz's five states a prospect can be in - unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, most aware - each demanding a different message: you cannot sell a solution to someone who has not noticed the problem. Still the sharpest targeting question in copy: what does the reader already know?

Brands can use creators in three escalating strategies: as a media channel (creator = messenger, strength reach, watch out credibility), as a creative partner (creator = co-author, strength relevance, watch out branding), and as a cultural asset (creator = protagonist, strength cultural resonance, watch out values mismatch). Match the strategy to the campaign goal - not every campaign needs creators in the same role.

Kantar's three actions for CMOs on creator investment: don't fall into the engagement trap (platform metrics tell you what the algorithm rewards, not what builds your brand); match your creator strategy to your campaign goals; steer the brand presence and brand message - make verbal brand mentions and the core message non-negotiable - then give creators freedom over every creative choice.

HexClad noticed in its Meta account that ads featuring Gordon Ramsay were its top performers, turned that insight into a formal partnership (Ramsay later invested in the company), scaled it up to a 2025 Super Bowl ad, and then cut the Super Bowl spot back into a range of Facebook ads so the celebrity credibility could be targeted at cooking fans and Ramsay fans.

Eucalyptus stopped trusting in-platform conversion numbers and rallied its team around creative efficiency instead: scaling spend into ads with strong hook rates, hold rates, click-through rates and top-of-funnel conversion, then triangulating with backend results to confirm that more efficient creative really produces more conversions.

Self-reported attribution under-reports brand channels. During a TV campaign, Eucalyptus sees a sudden spike in customers who say they heard about the brand on Meta or Instagram even though nothing changed on those platforms: the TV ad pushed them over the edge, but they remember the channel where they had already seen the brand. Read survey data as mental availability, not as a direct cause.

Brand creative should not be judged by immediate sales alone, but it can be measured in the short term: look for short-term lift in mental availability (brand recall, consideration, salience), brand searches, direct traffic and top-of-funnel growth by referral channel, and compare awareness and consideration movement against competitors to see whether you are outpacing the market.

For brand building without a Super Bowl budget, Eucalyptus finds broadcaster video on demand (BVOD) and YouTube the most reliable placements: both grow awareness and the customers they bring in convert at a rate that works for the business.

Creators are brand builders, not salespeople: IPA x WPP research shows creator short-term ROI is similar to other media channels, but creators carry the highest long-term multiplier of any channel; System1's Creative Dividend found campaigns including creators delivered the highest average brand effects (TV second).

User-generated content: material made by customers or ordinary users rather than the brand. In paid social the term has stretched to 'UGC-style' - ads deliberately shot to look homemade, because feed-native imperfection often outperforms studio polish.

A recurring character or dramatic scenario a brand runs across campaigns - a mascot, a running joke, a familiar situation. Fluent devices compress recognition: the audience knows who is speaking before the brand says its name, and campaigns that use them are more likely to drive large business effects.

Evidence that other people already chose you, used as persuasion: reviews, ratings, customer counts, familiar logos, creator endorsements. It works because imitation is a decision shortcut - when uncertain, people do what others like them did.

The one thing the ad must communicate, chosen at the cost of everything else the client also wanted to say. The classic discipline of the creative brief: a proposition with three messages is three propositions, and the audience will remember none of them.

Schwartz's other axis: how many similar claims the market has already heard. A fresh market believes the direct claim; a saturated one needs bigger proof, a new mechanism, or identification instead of promises. Explains why copying a competitor's winning claim rarely works - by the time you run it, the market has moved a stage.

CeraVe's "Romeo et Juliette" TikTok with comedian Anwar Jibawi - the brand defined the message (Air Foam Cleanser works for combination skin), the creator owned the creative choices, retelling Romeo and Juliet as Oilio and Dryliet. It won #1 in Kantar's Advertising Effectiveness Awards 2026 (Digital/Social).
